Guidance Program
The guidance counselors execute a guidance program that is developmental and preventative in nature. The guidance counselors provide a competency based guidance (CBG) program to the entire school. The CBG philosophy states that all students should be served. This is accomplished by classroom presentations in character education, interpersonal relationship training, conflict resolution, decision making skills, drug awareness, etc. Individual counseling with students also assists them in their life adjustment skills. Counselors are also called upon to serve as consultants to parents and teachers.

English As A Second Language (ESL)
The English as a Second Language (ESL) program is designed to provide language acquisition and vocabulary development for students who speak or are exposed to a language other than English. The ESL specialist observes students who have been referred by the classroom teacher or parent(s) at registration. If necessary, the student is screened for English proficiency level and enrolled in the program, with parental permission. Screening results are made January 18, 2008c difficulties are not due primarily to ESL proficiency. Those students who were previously enrolled in an ESL program and transfer into our school are placed in our program.

Teacher of the Learning Impaired (LI)
The teacher of LI students provides services for those students identified as having a disorder in understanding or using spoken or written language that may manifest itself as an inability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, remember, or do mathematical calculations as defined by DoD Instruction 1342.12. Students who are determined to have learning impairments are placed on an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Services for these students are usually provided using the inclusion model.

Communication Impaired Specialist
The Specialist of CI students provides screening, diagnostic, and therapy services on an individual or group basis for any child having a stuttering, articulation, voice or receptive/expressive language disorder.

Read 180
Reading Recovery is an early intervention program for first grade students who are "at risk" of reading failure. The goal of Reading Recovery is to help these children read at the class average and become independent readers as quickly as possible. Research has shown that children in the program typically reach this goal in 12-16 weeks.

Literacy Support Specialists (LSS)

LSS teachers assist children who are performing below grade level in language arts through small group/individual programs. This extra assistance can take place within the classroom or as part of a pull out program.

 Literacy Facilitator  

The Literacy Facilitator is an on-site teacher trainer for literacy initiatives. The job responsibilities include:

  • Work directly with classroom teachers to strengthen the core reading program for all students.
  • Co-plan and co-teach with a “homeroom class” during their literacy block.
  • Provide guidance with English, Language Arts (ELA) standards, balanced literacy, and Literacy Place. Facilitate instructional use of leveled books and supplementary materials.
  • Facilitate and foster professional development through study groups, course/s for credit, and staff development activities.
  • Work with classroom teachers to administer, analyze, and interpret assessment data to identify at-risk students and plan instruction.
  • Assist with scheduling and monitoring the substitute coverage that will be provided for teachers to conduct peer observations.
  • Assist teachers in the use of Scholastic technology components, Reading Counts, Scholastic Reading Inventory, Wiggle Works, and Smart Place.
  • Plan and coordinate training sessions for parents on literacy.
  • Assist teachers and serve as a resource as they develop their literacy PGP.
  • Participate in Partnership Committee with Literacy Support Specialists (LSS) and SIP Reading Committee

School Nurse
The school nurse works with educational and medical agencies to help plan, organize, implement, and evaluate the school health services. First aid is provided to ill and injured students and school personnel. Students requiring daily medication must get their dosage from the nurse. Teachers are not authorized to give medication to the students.

Spanish Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools (FLES)

The foregin language study is a compulsory and it is considered part of the core curriculum. It is believed that all students can enjoy and be successful in learning foreign languages.Kindergarten and 1st grade recieve 90 minutes a week of Spanish. The Spanish teachers travel to each class speaking to the student mostly in Spanish.


Gifted Education Program

Regulation 2590.1 establishes uniform policies and assigns responsibilities for the development and delivery of educational services for students demonstrating academic strength at the highest levels, equivalent to the top 3-5% of the school population.
The Gifted Review Committee is responsible for making decision through consensus regarding eligibility, ineligibility, or monitored status for each referred student.
Students are referred by parent, student, or teacher nomination.
As part of the Gifted Education Program there is School Wide Enrichment- All students 1-3 have the opportunity to attend enrichment classes approximately once a month. These classes focus on ideas which may not be presented in the regular classroom or extend ideas presented in the classroom in the classrooms. The activities focus on thinking skills, logic, problem solving skills, and creative thinking skills.
